The Lyrics Are True In Lindsay Ell’s New Single About Rape

The lyrics of Lindsay Ell’s new song ring true-to-life for her. In an interview with People.com she said, “I was raped when I was 13, and it happened again when I was 21.” She says it's something that she still processes every day.

A man in her church that her family knew, groomed her and eventually raped her. She said: “I felt like I had really messed up, that everybody was going to judge me and that the rest of my life was ruined.”

It wasn't until she was 20 years old that she was able to confide in her parents. She said they had no idea and were horrified. After that she started going to therapy.

The release date for the song, “Make You,” was intentional. Lindsay said: “I wanted to release it on Global Forgiveness Day. Forgiving people in our past is a huge thing for whatever reason, but forgiving yourself is so important. There's an incredible amount of healing that can happen, and it can't happen until you can truly open up that forgiveness for your own heart.”

She wrote her new single with Brandy Clark.
