Since revealing to the world her identity as a transgender person in 2020, Zaya Wade has been publicly shown unwavering support by both her step-mom Gabrielle Union and dad, Dwyane Wade.

In a sit-down interview with Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts back in February 2020, Wade spoke about how his daughter’s gender identity helped them to become more knowledgeable and the fact that her courage inspires the entire family.

“Myself and my family, we love the fact that she doesn’t have to hide who she is,” he said. “She is our leader.”

Then in March of this year, the Wades spoke to Buzzfeed about the importance of loving Zaya — and all of their other three children — “out loud.”

“As our children show up, it is our job to believe them when they tell us who they are and not impose our dreams, hopes, fears, and desires on them.”

And in the latest display of Wade’s love and encouragement for his 14-year-old daughter, the former basketball star briefly broke away from the glitz and glamour of the Met Gala carpet on Monday evening, to offer advice to fathers like him, who may be raising transgender children.

“The moment when you were in the hospital and you grabbed your daughter and you looked at your daughter and all the things that went through your mind…and how much love fills your heart,” he said to Variety. “Don’t let that ever leave you, no matter what.”

Reiterating her earlier Buzzfeed comments, Union chimed in saying, “And we believe them when they tell us who they are.”

While many have condemned Union and Wade for their constant championing and openness, Wade told Variety that he’s “just being a father.”
